South African motorists are in for a massive shock at the pumps next week as the price of petrol is set to break the R30 per litre mark for the first time ever.
According to the final update from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the price of 95 octane petrol is expected to increase by a staggering R3.21 per litre. This will take the price from the current R26.92 to R30.13 per litre.
This is the highest petrol price South Africa has ever seen and it comes at a time when many households are already struggling with the high cost of living.
Why Is The Price Increasing?
The huge increase is linked to rising international oil prices and the weak Rand against the US Dollar. Global oil markets have been under pressure in recent weeks, and South Africa, as an oil-importing country, is feeling the direct impact.
Experts have warned that this increase will affect more than just car owners. Taxi fares, food prices, and the cost of transporting goods are all expected to go up, putting more pressure on consumers.
What Motorists Can Do Right Now
With fuel now past R30, many South Africans are being advised to:
- Carpool where possible
- Use public transport
- Ensure their cars are fuel-efficient and tyres are properly inflated
- Consider more fuel-efficient or hybrid vehicles
The new fuel prices will officially come into effect on Wednesday, 8 October 2026.
Motorists are advised to fill up their tanks before the increase hits.
